Capsular: A Multi-Functional, Sustainable Design

Harun Ayaydın's Capsular is a unique piece of furniture that stands out for its versatility and sustainable design. The design, which is based on the capsular form, features circular and elliptical shapes. Each piece of the design can be customized with different colors and used in a variety of combinations. The Capsular can serve as a stool, shelf, or table, demonstrating its multi-functionality.

The Capsular's unique properties lie in its adaptability and space-saving features. The design allows for numerous combinations according to the user's needs, making it a practical addition to any space. When used individually, the Capsular can function as a seating element or a center table. When stacked, it transforms into a stylish shelving unit.

The Capsular is made using reshaped and renewable plastics, with sustainable waste wood coating used for the wooden parts. This commitment to using recycled materials underscores Ayaydın's dedication to sustainable design. The stool's dimensions are 40cm in height and 40cm in diameter, with an oval cut eye in the middle height of 32cm. The bench's lower case height is 40cm, with a sponge height of 5cm, making the total seating place's height 45cm.

The design process for the Capsular was informed by research on breathing cycles. Ayaydın studied the breathing waves of living organisms through videos and articles, using this research to shape the design's form. The capsular shape was inspired by the curves and waves of breathing movements. The design project began in August 2016, and prototype trials are still ongoing.

One of the main challenges Ayaydın faced during the design process was finding balance points and deciding on the production material. He was committed to using recycled materials to create a sustainable design, but struggled to find materials with the right level of endurance. Eventually, he decided to use plastics recycled from waste and waste wooden coating for the wooden parts.

The Capsular has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Capsular is a testament to Ayaydın's commitment to sustainable design and his ability to combine form and function in a unique and innovative way.
